Program Description: This training will present an overview of individual and family functioning from a developmental and systemic perspective.  Specific social, structural and relational factors that contribute to adaptive functioning will be identified and signs of disturbances in family functioning will be explored. Participants will be provided the opportunity to apply concepts to case examples.  Interventions useful to addressing individual and overall family functioning will be presented. 

Goals:

·        Understand the concept of systems theory and the characteristics of systems

·        Understand how a family assessment facilitates clinical assessment

·        Become familiar with the theoretical foundation and empirical evidence for the effectiveness of a family systems approach to intervention

Objectives:

·        State the core concepts of family systems theory

·        Identify characteristics of a healthy functioning family

·        Identify three tools for assessing family functioning

·        Develop clinical hypothesis to explain maladaptive behaviors/ symptoms

·        Given case examples create possible intervention to facilitate change

Morning Session 8:45 – 12:15

·        Characteristics of Systems 8:45-9:30

·        Core Concepts of Family Dynamics 9:30 – 10:30

BREAK 10:30-10:45

·        Aspects of Healthy Functioning 10:45-11:15

·        Assessment of Family Functioning 11:15-12:30

LUNCH 12:15-1:00

Afternoon Session 1:00-4:00

·        Creating clinical hypothesis 1 – 1:45

·        Intervention: joining, setting goals, shifting patterns of interactions 1:45 -2:45

BREAK 2:45-3:00

·        Application and Skills practice 3:00 – 3:45

·        Wrap up, take away, evaluation 3:45-4:00
