Program Description:  In order to respond to individuals who are in crisis, clinicians need not only strong clinical skills, but also knowledge of information about legal state mandates, system resources, as well knowledge of current research supporting best practices in crisis assessment and intervention.  This training is designed for mental health professionals who desire to increase their confidence and knowledge in responding to mental health crisis situations. Topics covered will include the physical, psychological, and emotional aspects of crisis, Ohio Revised code and associated legal mandates, and local community resources.  Specific clinical skills associated with accurate assessment, intervention, and safety planning, as well as ethical and cultural considerations, will be addressed. 

Goals:

·        Understand the various types of mental health crisis that individuals experience and increase skills in assessment, intervention, and safety planning.

·        Understand the legal, ethical and cultural issues in crisis intervention and prevention.

 Objectives

·        Define “mental health” crisis is and differentiate between a situational and developmental crisis.

·        Discuss aspects of suicide prevention

·        Identify various local mental health system community resources and know appropriate ways to access those resources.

·        Develop a safety plan that complies with the standards mandated by Ohio Law.

·        Explain the impact of cultural identity on the experience of crisis and crisis intervention.

·        Given specific case examples, identify legal and ethical concerns and offer alternative responses that reflect compliance with ethical standards and legal mandates.

3.      Level of Care, Community Resources, and Safety 10- 10:30

4.      Legal Implications and documentation 10:45 -11:30

5.      Responding to Crisis Situations 11:30 – 12:15

6.      Ethical and Cultural Considerations 12:15-12:45

7.      Implementation plan, take aways and evaluation 12:45-1:00
