Program Description: 

Research has long supported the efficacy of skills training interventions for improving the behavioral, social and emotional functioning of individuals. This training will explore the many uses of a skills training approach. Specific therapeutic techniques and strategies will be presented and practiced. The program components of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy will be presented along with examples of the specific skills associated with DBT. Participants will not be considered to be "trained-in" or “certified” to provide DBT to clients in their respective professional environments as a result of attending this training.

Goals:

  • Understand the history of and fundamental aspects of DBT
  • Become familiar with the four primary skills associate with the DBT treatment model.
  • Understand the intent and purpose of each of the skills modules used in DBT. 

Objectives:

  • Define and apply the core skills training strategies.
  • Differentiate between DBT and other skills training approaches.
  • Explain the skills modules used in DBT and identify specific activities relevant to each.

Workshop Outline:

Morning Session: 8:45 – 12:15 pm (15 min break ~10:30)

1.      Background history, origins and definitions

2.      Target populations / research and best practice

3.      DBT: The treatment model 

12:15 – 1:00 Lunch

Afternoon Session: 1 - 4:00 pm (15 minute break ~2:30)

4.      DBT: Core skills

5.      Practical application of skills

6.      Wrap up, take away and evaluation.
